Effective Treatment for Schizoaffective Disorders

When someone arrives at our schizoaffective disorder treatment centers, we begin by performing a comprehensive assessment. This allows us to understand the history of the person’s mental health and their specific symptoms. Our staff determines which level of outpatient rehab programs will best serve their needs and meet their schedules.

Any co-occurring disorders that are present, such as anxiety, depression, or dual diagnosis disorders, will be identified and a plan made to include treatment for them.

We offer several types of therapy modalities to elevate each person’s ability to reduce their symptoms. Our goal is to create a way for them to enjoy lasting emotional and behavioral changes. We include family therapy so that loved ones can learn about their family member’s illness and how to come together to support them. Other types of therapy we offer include:

Our Schizoaffective Treatment Options

We provide outpatient mental health services that helps people learn to control some of their symptoms and improve their mental health. Available levels of outpatient care at our schizoaffective disorder treatment centers include:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Therapy sessions take place Monday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Our highest level of care provides structured treatment that teaches symptom management and skill-building to help people understand and control some of their symptoms.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Sessions take place for a few hours per day several days per week. A lower level than PHP, it provides several comprehensive types of therapy and skill-building to help improve the individual’s symptoms.
  • Evening IOP: The same as our daytime IOP, but it takes place for a few hours in the evening several nights per week. This helps meet the needs of those who have responsibilities during the day they must meet.

How Do I Know I Need Treatment for Schizoaffective Disorder?

Too often, someone who has schizoaffective disorder does not realize how sick they have become or even that they have a diagnosable mental health disorder. Signs and symptoms that someone can benefit from the structured care provided by schizoaffective disorder treatment centers include:

  • Delusions and false beliefs even though contradictory evidence about them exist
  • Hallucinations
  • Cognitive difficulties such as illogical thinking, trouble focusing on what’s going on, and jumping from topic to topic
  • Detachment from other people and what’s occurring around them
  • Depression and low self-worth
  • Manic episodes of euphoria, high energy, and engaging in some risky behaviors
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • Symptoms impact the individual’s personal relationships and ability to work or attend school

Causes of Schizoaffective Disorder

It can prove difficult to pinpoint exactly what causes a person to develop schizoaffective disorder. This challenging mental health disorder may run in a person’s family, which increases the odds they will develop it. It can also be due to a malfunction in how the brain operates. Going through traumatic or highly stressful events can also influence the development of this disease, as well as a history of taking mind-altering drugs. An assessment by experienced clinicians at schizoaffective disorder treatment centers can help determine contributing factors.

Other Conditions Related to Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective disorder often causes symptoms similar to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In fact, it can make it difficult for someone to get an accurate diagnosis unless the clinician is a mental health expert. While having schizoaffective disorder does not guarantee a person will also experience a substance use disorder, many people do go on to develop one. When someone has both schizoaffective disorder and an addiction to drugs or alcohol, it’s important to seek help for a dual diagnosis. This integrated treatment allows both disorders to be treated simultaneously.
