We believe in a holistic approach to healing and offer evidence-based treatments that address individual needs. Most importantly, we strive to create a safe space where each person can find their own path towards recovery and health.

What is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine focused on diagnosing and treating mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, eating disorders, and alcohol and substance use disorders. Psychiatrists employ medical treatments along with counseling therapy to treat their patients. They determine the most effective course of treatment based on individual patient needs.

What is Psychiatry for Addiction?

Addiction psychiatry is a subspecialty of psychiatry that focuses on diagnosing and treating substance use disorders. Addiction psychiatrists are experts in behavioral therapies for addiction, such as cognitive behavior therapy, and pharmacological treatments, such as Suboxone or Naltrexone. They utilize evidence-based techniques to provide individualized care for their patients by addressing both physiological and psychological needs.

Additionally, we work with our clients to create an environment of understanding as we work together toward lasting health, healing, and long-term sobriety.

What is The Difference Between Psychiatry and Psychology?

Psychiatry is a field of medicine focused on treating mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. Psychiatrists treat their patients using medical treatments, such as medications and psychotherapies. Conversely, psychology is centered around understanding how physical or environmental factors influence thoughts and behaviors. Both psychiatrists and psychologists utilize therapeutic techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to treat individuals with mental health disorders.

How Does Psychiatry Benefit Those in Recovery from Addiction?

Psychiatry can benefit individuals with substance use disorders by providing necessary medical treatments and psychotherapy to address the physical and psychological effects of addiction. Additionally, our psychiatrists develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

Treatment plans often include CBT, DBT, group therapy, family therapy, medication management, and peer support groups. These components work together to reduce the symptoms of addiction, promote long-term abstinence from substances, and improve the overall quality of life in recovery.

Services We Provide

North Atlanta Behavioral Health provides access to a variety of mental health and co-occurring addiction services near Atlanta. At our treatment center, we offer:

  • Medication-Assisted Treatment: Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based practice for treating substance use disorders that combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies.
  • Psychiatry Services: Psychiatry services involve medical treatments offered by licensed psychiatrists to help people uncover the cause of their addictions and mental health issues while developing a unique care plan.
  • Brainspotting: Brainspotting is an indirect form of trauma therapy that uses eye positions (“brainspots”) to identify areas in the brain where traumatic memories are stored. The goal of brainspotting is to bring awareness to these emotions while helping clients learn coping strategies.
  • Red Light Therapy: Red light therapy is a noninvasive, evidence-based approach used to treat substance abuse and other mental health issues.
  • Holistic Therapy: Holistic therapy focuses on promoting physical, mental, and emotional wellness through multiple approaches, including medication, lifestyle changes, health, fitness, and nutrition.
  • Family Therapy: Family therapy is an essential component in treating addiction as it supports healing through strengthened interpersonal relationships within families.
  • Medically-Supervised Detox: Medically-supervised detox helps people detox safely and can include using MAT to help alleviate withdrawal symptoms.
  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs): PHPs are for individuals who require more intensive treatment than traditional outpatient programs but do not require 24/7 inpatient care.
  • Daytime Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs): Daytime IOPs are designed to provide structure for those lacking motivation or unable to commit to long-term residential treatment.
  • Evening IOPs: Evening IOPs offer an alternative treatment option for individuals who have work or school obligations during the day but still need addiction treatment services.

We can also refer our clients to sober living facilities when they lack a supportive or safe environment at home.
